Making wishes and giving thanks: expressing hope and gratitude

Make a wish with care when you have hopes for the future. When something changes for the better, take time to give thanks. Describe your original hope, what has actually changed and any promise you made, giving both hope and gratitude their place.

Let’s look at these questions clearly first

Is it customary to give thanks after a wish comes true?

In folk traditions, people often give thanks to the Buddhas or deities they honoured after a wish comes true, and keep any promise they made. If you specified when, where or how you would give thanks, review that promise first. If you did not specify a form, you can still express sincere gratitude.

How does giving thanks differ from making a new wish?

Giving thanks looks back at what has actually changed, focusing on gratitude and keeping promises. Making a wish expresses hope for the future. During one visit, you can give thanks first and then express a new wish, keeping the two intentions clear.

How can I arrange to give thanks while living overseas?

Note the original temple, the figure you honoured, your wish and what has come true, then list any promises you made. If you cannot visit in person, ask which arrangements can be carried out on your behalf. Personal commitments such as companionship or good deeds remain yours to carry out.

What to say when making a wish and when giving thanks
My thoughts this time Main text Arrange key points
Make a wish Who are you here for, what are you worried about now, and what changes do you hope to usher in? Choose a temple and figure; if you promised to give thanks, note what you can personally carry out
Giving thanks after a wish comes true What wishes were made at that time, what things have been accomplished now, and how do you want to express your gratitude? Check the original location, original agreement and actual implementable way of thank you
Making a new wish after giving thanks First thank you for the changes that have occurred, and then explain your new expectations Separate previous arrangements from new arrangements to avoid omissions or duplications

Why remember to give thanks after a wish comes true?

Wishes often arise when someone matters to us: a relative is recovering, a child is preparing for exams, a relationship is uncertain or a business is starting. Giving thanks returns to that intention: “Things have moved forward. I remember what I hoped for, and I remember to express gratitude.”

The folk saying that wishes should be followed by thanks emphasises gratitude and keeping one's word. If you said, “If this comes true, I will return to give thanks,” or made another specific promise, plan how to keep it once the wish comes true. Giving thanks may involve a respectful visit as well as promised good deeds and everyday actions.

Buddhist, Taoist and family customs differ. Buddhist aspirations and putting them into practice concern ideals and action; the folk custom of giving thanks after a wish comes true places particular emphasis on gratitude. Understand the temple and your original intention before choosing a form, rather than copying a fixed online formula.

Write down your wish and keep a record for a future visit to give thanks

First write down three things in your own words: Who am I here for, what worries you most now, and how do you hope things will develop. For example, "For children who are preparing to enter higher education, I hope they can concentrate on their review, take exams calmly, and successfully enter the school of their choice." is more clear than writing "seeking studies" alone.

If you are willing to make a commitment when making a wish, choose something that is within your ability and that you are truly willing to stick to. You can write down "come back to express gratitude", "be more serious about spending time with your family" or a certain good deed. There is no need to make unaffordable amounts of money and complicated arrangements due to temporary anxiety.

Leave a brief record for yourself: the name of the temple, your wishes at the time, the person to whom you pay homage, and whether you have agreed on a time or method for thanking you. The record can be saved on your own device and does not need to be made public; there is no need to write in additional names, birthdays, addresses, etc. just for solemnity.

Ten kinds of wishes: expressing hope and giving thanks

A wish expresses hope; thanks describes what has actually changed. Each category below has a pair of examples. Adapt them to your own names and experiences. Do not describe something as already achieved simply to fit a thanksgiving example.

Health and Rehabilitation

These wishes can concern your own wellbeing or loved ones receiving care. You may hope for treatment, recovery or daily care to go smoothly. When giving thanks, describe only real progress, such as completed treatment, discharge from hospital or a return to daily life.

Wishing example

I hope that my treatment and recuperation during this period will go smoothly, my body and mind will gradually become more peaceful, and my sleep and daily life will slowly resume. I hope I have the patience to take care of my body and cherish the support given by my family and medical staff.

Example of giving thanks

I prayed for recovery before, but now I have been discharged from the hospital smoothly, and my life has gradually stabilized. I am here to express my gratitude today. May you cherish the hard-won ordinary days, continue to take serious rest, and remember to take care of the people around you.

Parents’ health and elders’ longevity

You can describe an elder's daily life, wellbeing and companionship. Reasons to give thanks may include coming through a difficulty, recovering after surgery or settling into a steadier life. Long-term wellbeing need not be presented as a single completed event.

Wishing example

I wish my parents good health, a stable life, less hard work, and more peace of mind. Although I am overseas, I still miss you every day; I also hope that I can make my greetings and companionship more practical so that they can rely on them in their hearts.

Example of giving thanks

I prayed for my father to get through the physical difficulties safely. Now that he has gone home to recuperate, his family is gradually relieved, so I would like to express my gratitude. May we cherish our time together, spend more time with each other, and take care of each other every day in the future.

Wealth and Income

Make wishes about finances concrete: stable income, fair reward for work, improved household finances or gradual savings. When giving thanks, describe income actually received or progress already made, and review any promise you made.

Wishing example

May your wealth be steady, your hard work be rewarded, your family's income will increase, and your income and expenses will be in order. I also hope that I can be honest in my work, spend my money wisely, and accumulate a calm and stable life for my family.

Example of giving thanks

Previously, I prayed for family income and life settlement. Now that the new source of income has stabilized and the current pressure has been relieved, I would like to express my gratitude. I will cherish what I have gained, plan carefully, and implement the good intentions I originally promised.

Business and Entrepreneurship

These examples concern opening a business, daily operations, working with clients or delivering a project. Identify the milestone you hope for, such as a shop opening or a confirmed partnership. When giving thanks, acknowledge that milestone and your intention to continue doing business honestly.

Wishing example

A new store will be opened. I hope the preparations will go smoothly, the customer base will gradually stabilize, and the products and services we provide will be recognized. I am willing to cooperate with each other and be trustworthy, and the operation will be long-term and orderly. I also hope that I will live up to the trust of my customers and take good care of the people I work with.

Example of giving thanks

I prayed for the opening of the new store before, but now the store has opened smoothly, and the first phase of operations has gradually stabilized. I came to express my gratitude today. I hope that I will remember my original intention when I started my business, treat customers with integrity, and take every support into my heart.

Academics and Examinations

Wishes may concern school admission, professional or language exams, or study-abroad applications. When giving thanks, name the milestone already reached, such as passing an exam, receiving an offer or completing a course, and carry that gratitude into your next stage of learning.

Wishing example

I hope that when I prepare for the exam, I will be focused and practical, be able to understand and remember what I have learned, and be able to perform calmly on the spot, so that I can pass this exam smoothly. I also hope that I will cherish learning opportunities and do a good job in daily accumulation.

Example of giving thanks

I previously expressed a wish to pass an exam and have now received a passing result. I am here to give thanks for the support along the way. May I remember the effort it took and continue learning with care.

Career and work

You can distinguish wishes about a job search, a new role, promotion or career direction. Compared with financial wishes, career wishes focus more on opportunity, ability, relationships and long-term direction. Give thanks for a job actually started or progress already made.

Wishing example

I hope I can find a job that suits me, express myself clearly in interviews, and get recognition and appropriate opportunities. I hope that after joining the company, my colleagues will get along well with each other, my strengths will be fully utilized, and I will have the patience to shoulder new responsibilities well.

Example of giving thanks

I prayed for a job before, but now I have been accepted and successfully joined the job. I am here to express my gratitude today. I hope that I will cherish new opportunities, fulfill my responsibilities in a down-to-earth manner, be kind to my colleagues, and keep a steady path ahead.

Marriage and meeting your partner

These examples are for people hoping to meet a suitable partner and build a sincere relationship. Express your values and hopes without deciding for someone who has not agreed to a relationship. Give thanks for an encounter and mutual commitment that have actually occurred.

Wishing example

I hope I can meet people who are sincere, kind, and cherish each other, and slowly build relationships based on respect and understanding. I also hope that I can see my own feelings clearly, learn to express them honestly, and have the courage to seriously manage a suitable relationship.

Example of giving thanks

I used to pray for a good match, but now I have met a partner who is willing to understand each other and get along seriously, so I would like to express my gratitude. May we cherish this encounter, respect each other, and use daily care to let our relationship slowly take root.

Marriage and emotional harmony

Wishes about marriage can concern shared life, responsibilities and lasting companionship. During difficulties, describe a willingness to listen and communicate. Give thanks for a wedding that went smoothly, a reunion or a genuine moment of mutual understanding.

Wishing example

May our marriage be harmonious, remember to care about each other when we are busy, and be willing to talk well when we have different opinions. We are willing to shoulder the responsibilities of life together, cherish our company along the way, and make this family warm and stable.

Example of giving thanks

Previously, I prayed for the two of them to reunite smoothly and get along well. Now that they have ended their lives in the two places, and have clarified their expectations for each other again, I came to express my gratitude today. May we cherish this closeness and implement our understanding into our daily lives in the future.

Family Peace and Reunion

These examples concern families separated overseas, settling after a move and getting along at home. When giving thanks, recall a reunion, a safe move or progress on a family difficulty, acknowledging what you went through together.

Wishing example

May the family be safe, understand each other even though they are far apart across the ocean, and have the opportunity to meet each other when they want to reunite. I also hope that the elders and younger ones in the family can be harmonious, discuss problems together, and live ordinary days in a solid and warm way.

Example of giving thanks

Previously, I hoped that the family would be reunited safely. Now that we have met each other and settled things at home smoothly, I would like to express my gratitude. I hope to cherish every time we get together in the future, and keep our care as normal no matter how far away we are.

Traveling and living overseas

You can express wishes for travel, study abroad, an overseas assignment or a move to another country. Distinguish a safe arrival, adapting to new surroundings and settling into daily life. When giving thanks, record the stage of the journey already completed safely.

Wishing example

I am about to travel far. I wish you a safe journey and a smooth arrival and settlement. I hope I will meet goodwill in my new city, my studies and work will get better, and my family far away will feel less worried.

Example of giving thanks

I prayed for my long journey before, but now I have arrived safely. My residence and work are gradually settled. I am here to express my gratitude today. I hope I will remember the help along the way, take good care of my life, and always report peace to my family.

Giving thanks: connecting your original wish, what has changed and your gratitude

Let your thanks connect to the original wish. Recall that wish, describe what has actually changed and explain any promise you now intend to keep. You do not need to turn your experience into a legend or make a larger commitment than you originally intended.

  1. 01

Looking back at the original wish

Find the original temple and the object of worship, and recall who and what you made a wish for at that time; if you have entrusted it, you can compare it with your saved wishes and visit records.

  2. 02

    Explain changes in wishes

Tell clearly which things have been implemented, such as family members going home to recuperate, passing an exam, or two people getting together; keep things that are still in progress as they are.

  3. 03

    Fulfill the original agreement

Check to see if a time, place or method of acknowledgment has been agreed upon. Actions that can be completed in person are implemented by yourself, and matters that need to be arranged on-site must be confirmed in advance.

  4. 04

    Solemnly express gratitude

State your intention and express your thanks clearly. Afterwards, check the private visit records against the arrangements agreed in advance.

Ways to give thanks, and how to choose

The most direct way is to return to the temple where you made your wish, pay respect and express your gratitude. Some people will choose to offer flowers, fruits, etc. if allowed by the local area; some people are willing to continue their gratitude by doing good deeds, helping others, or taking care of their families more seriously. When choosing, first look at your agreement at the time, and then look at your temple viewing habits and actual ability.

If you have made a clear commitment to chanting sutras, fasting, volunteering, or other personal actions, you need to distinguish which things you want to practice yourself and which things you can ask for help from others. The rituals, memorial tablets and special ceremonies hosted by the temple must also be distinguished from ordinary on-site worship, and the specific form shall be confirmed by the corresponding venue.

The size and price of an offering need not be the measure of gratitude. If you have not agreed on a certain kind of offering, you can explain your intention first and then understand the executable options. Whether flowers, apples, lights, water, etc. can be provided needs to be checked according to the confirmed services of the specific temple.

The small screen allows you to swipe left or right to see the full comparison.

Ways of thanking and appropriate thoughts
Method What is suitable to express Check before arrangement
Respectfully thank you My wish has been fulfilled and I want to go back to the original place to say thank you. Accurate temple views, objects of worship and content of thanks
Devotion as originally agreed It has been agreed before that flowers, fruits or other specific methods Whether the temple is acceptable, form, quantity and actual cost
Practice goodwill Have promised to help others, spend time with family, or continue to do a good deed Who will complete it, how to implement it, and continue according to your own ability
Special temple ceremony The previous agreement was for specific matters to be presided over by religious figures Please confirm with the corresponding temple, it cannot be replaced by ordinary on-site service

When and where to give thanks, and what to do if circumstances change

If there is a clear agreement on time and place when making a wish, the original arrangement will be made after the wish is fulfilled. If there is no agreement, you can choose a suitable date to express your gratitude when you confirm that the matter has been settled and your conditions permit; there is no need to rush to place an order just to meet a certain deadline that is circulated on the Internet.

Many people are willing to return to the original temple because it carries their thoughts at that time; especially when it was clearly stated that they wanted to "come back", they should first consider how to fulfill it. If you are overseas or cannot go to the original place temporarily, you can learn from the relevant temples about their traditional practices, and then decide whether to go in person, postpone it, or entrust the part.

When only part of the wish has been realized, you can first thank the progress that has occurred and explain what you are still working on. If you forget the specific wording, record what you still remember truthfully; when the original agreement is obviously beyond your current ability, you can also explain the situation first and re-verify the feasible arrangements.

Arranging a visit to give thanks while living overseas

The instructions to customer service can be divided into two parts: "If you want to express", write your original wishes, current situation and thanks; "Things that need to be arranged", write the exact temple, expected date and originally agreed matters. An area like Mount Wutai contains many temples. Try to specify which one you want to visit.

Before confirming the entrustment, check the service scope, final fee and visit record content. If the original commitment is for personal actions or special religious ceremonies, please explain it separately so that you can determine the appropriate arrangement. Safe and independent on-site service should correspond to the matters you confirm one by one.

After the visit, private records help you check the location, selected items and what was carried out. Submit a request, then confirm the service and payment arrangements with our official support team. The website does not collect payments directly, and submission does not confirm a booking or establish payment. Neither wishes nor thanks require you to share your full story in public comments.

And these specific questions

Must I give thanks at the same temple?

First check if there is a clear agreement on the location at that time. Returning to the original temple is a common practice, and it can also continue the sentiment; if you are unable to go, you should understand the follow-up arrangements based on the corresponding traditions, and the trustee should not change the location without authorization.

Is there a fixed number of days in which to give thanks after a wish comes true?

Different traditions and personal agreements vary, and there is no fixed number of days that applies to all temples and all wishes. If the time has been agreed upon, the original arrangement will be made first; if there is no agreement, you can solemnly express your gratitude when conditions permit.

What if I did not specify how I would give thanks?

You can start by expressing gratitude, and then choose a method based on your temple viewing habits and your own abilities. There’s no need to make up an expensive commitment afterwards that wasn’t made at the time, or buy an entire offering just to show your solemnity.

Only part of the wish came true, can you thank me first?

You can truthfully state the improvement that has occurred and express staged gratitude; how it was originally agreed to be completed can be checked against the actual situation based on the conditions at that time. It is not necessary to write that things that have not yet been realized have been completed.

Can I make a new wish when giving thanks?

You can explain the two intentions separately: first thank you for the previous things, fulfill the existing agreement, and then express your next expectations. The new wish does not need to replace or overwrite the original thank you.

What if I forgot to give thanks or cannot remember my exact words?

First write down the temples, things and commitments that you still remember, and then arrange appropriate thanks. The key point is to review honestly and practice according to your ability, without adding unnecessary burden just because you can't remember clearly.

Are offerings and special ceremonies included in the agency?

Specific projects should be checked before commissioning. Basic attendance to pay respects, optional offerings, and rituals or memorial tablet arrangements hosted by the temple are different matters; unconfirmed content will not be automatically included.

Let wishes be expressed and gratitude have a place to go.
